Mrs. Velda Berniece (Miller) Martin, 100, of Thorntown, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021, at her home surrounded by family.

Velda was born May 7, 1921, in Clinton County, a daughter of the late Roy Kenneth and Hazel Prudence (Cooley) Miller. She married Ernest William Martin on Dec. 15, 1939, in Frankfort. He preceded her in death Feb. 9, 1999.

Velda graduated from Mulberry High School with the class of 1939. She was a homemaker until the late 1950's, when she worked for Streamline Trailer in Thorntown for 5 years, Stewart & Warner in Lebanon for 4 years, and then Dale's Machine Shop in Thorntown until retirement. Velda was proud to be CPR certified and responsible for keeping record of every employee's medical care at work; she also received a certificate for exemplary service at the time of retirement.

Velda was a member of the Sugar Plain Friends Church in Thorntown.

Survivors include her children, Linda Martin Basey of Thorntown, Ann Martin Smith of Thorntown, and William Jerry (Errolyn) Martin of Coldwater, MI; grandchildren, Angela (Scott) Opsahl, Michael (Sheri) Basey, Benjamin (Amy) Smith, Nicholas Smith, Tim (Salli) Martin, Ryan (Mary) Martin, Virl Martin, Scott Martin, and Tracy (Brad) Glenn; great grandchildren, Sam (Alicia) Opsahl, Gabe (Emily) Opsahl, Jake Opsahl, Kristen Basey, William Basey, Josh Martin, Jeryn Martin, Mya Martin, Vincent (Haleigh) Smith, Avery Smith, Zaria Smith, Cole Smith, Kalista Smith, Jaden Smith, Dominick Smith, Eliza Smith, Kathryn Koenig, Justin Martin, Madisen Glenn, Ashley Glenn, Morgan Martin, and Kimberly Martin; and 4 great- great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Velda was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Lee Martin.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, Nov. 6, for visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon.  Velda will be laid to rest at St. James Lutheran Cemetery near Darlington.
