Sheldon Marrs, 94, of Lebanon, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Homewood Health Campus of Lebanon.
Sheldon was born in Warsaw, Indiana, the son of Jacob and Bessie Marrs (Hammond). Sheldon married Mary Beyers in Pana, Illinois in January 1960.
Sheldon graduated from Larwill High School in 1949 where he was a four-sport athlete. He joined the United States Navy during the Korean War Era serving his country from 1951-1955 spending most of that time in Japan as a Communication Technician decoding enemy transmissions. Service awards received included the Navy Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service medal, Korean Service medal, and United Nations medal.
He attended Indiana University in Bloomington where he met his wife Mary and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business. He was social chairman at Hall House, member of Alpha Delta Sigma, the Marketing Club and the IU foundation.
Sheldon and Mary moved back to Zionsville, Indiana from Washington D.C. in 1965, moving to Lebanon a year later. Sheldon worked for Meridian Insurance Company as an underwriter for 31 years before retirement. He volunteered as a youth basketball coach for the YMCA, and was a yearly participant in the Boone County Table Tennis Tournament winning many top awards in singles and doubles competition.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where he also served as an usher. He was an automobile enthusiast with a passion for cars, attending many auto shows, and giving automotive advice to friends and neighbors. Also an avid sports fan and a loyal supporter of Indiana University basketball.
Sheldon is survived by his sons Steven of Columbus and Michael of Indianapolis, several nieces and nephews: Lori, Elizabeth, Carol, Joseph, Ellen, Eileen, Stephen, Kevin, Shelly, Anne, Shawn, Martin, Julie, Suzanne, Andy, Angela and Shelley.
He was preceded in death by both parents, his wife Mary, sister Shirley Redman, sisters-in-law Kathleen McGovern, Marjorie Beyers, Patricia Beyers, Joan Beyers, Betty Beyers in infancy, brothers-in-law Louis Beyers, Kirk Beyers, Pete Redman, Joseph McGovern, and nephew John Beyers.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm Wednesday September 16 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Lebanon. Catholic mass will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Fr. Sean Aaron officiating. A luncheon will follow mass in the Church event hall. Sheldon will be laid to rest at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, Indiana.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United States Navy Memorial fund or Boys and Girls Clubs of Indiana. Arrangements by Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary.
