Mr. Richard Allen “Rick” Koontz, 78, of Thorntown, passed away Monday, August 3, 2026, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. He was born May 11, 1948, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Joseph A. and Opal G. (Baugh) Koontz. Rick married Carolyn Mitchell on November 22, 1970, in Advance, Indiana, and she survives.

Rick graduated from Thorntown High School with the Class of 1966. He proudly served his country in the Indiana National Guard from 1967 until 1973. Throughout his working years, Rick was employed by Lebanon Vault Company and also installed water softeners and in-ground swimming pools before working in construction. He later spent 25 years as an automobile sales associate in the Indianapolis area, where he sold motor homes, cars, and trucks.

Rick enjoyed playing golf, tending to his garden, and taking meticulous care of his yard. An accomplished woodworker, he crafted many beautiful pieces of furniture that will be cherished by his family for years to come.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Koontz; daughter, Jennifer (Dave) Scott; grandchildren, Drake (Danny) Koontz, Drew Fields, and Jada Scott; great-grandchildren, Jack and Michael Koontz; step-grandchildren, Marla (Aries) Hyman, Paige (Tom) Beard, and Dawson Scott; step-great-grandchildren, Hadley Fuller, Blake Scott, and Bohdi and Barrett Beard; brother, Steven (Shelley) Koontz; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brothers, David, Gary, and John Koontz; and his sisters, Janet Koontz Lanpher and Donna Koontz Hankins.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, August 8, 2026, for visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Immediately following services, Rick will be laid to rest at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
