Melva Sue Smith, 84, of Lebanon, Indiana, passed away on January 2, 2025, surrounded by
family.
Melva was born on October 26, 1940 in Lebanon. She was the daughter of the late Donald and
Ethel (Wagoner) Caldwell.
Melva Sue graduated from Lebanon Senior High School with the class of 1959. Together with
her late husband, A.K., she and their family called Thorntown home for many years, where they
raised their two sons and ran the Sugar Creek Hardware store. Later, Melva Sue and A.K.
returned to Lebanon, where she worked at Mayflower in Indianapolis before retiring. She loved
spending time with her family, playing cards, reading and cooking. Her greatest love was for her
children and grandchildren. She supported them with unwavering love, always proud of each
milestone, no matter how big or small.
Melva Sue is survived by her two sons, Scott Smith of Lebanon and Tadd (Wendi) Smith of St.
John's, Florida and her sister, Pamela Lonsdale; Grandchildren, Zach (Claire) Smith, Tyler
(Chelsie) Smith, Eli Smith, Alexi (Jacob) Smith, and Samantha Smith. Great grandchildren,
Cooper Smith, Lockett Smith, Elliott Smith, Ruby Smith, Mary Claire Smith, Hayden Smith, Sullie
Smith, Emma Key, JR Endsley, and Walker Endsley. And many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alan (A.K.) Smith, with whom she shared
31 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, step-mother Pauline
Caldwell, her sister Linda Portish, brothers Luther "Bud" Gilliam and Dennis Caldwell, her sisterin-law Jere Gilliam and brother-in-law Joseph Portish.
Family and friends will gather Friday, January 10th for visitation from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. in the
Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Funeral service to follow
visitation. Melva Sue will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. You are invited to visit

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Indiana State Police and the
Boone County Cancer Society.
